Case Study: Flexible Space Structures in Educational Buildings

 Universities increasingly seek flexible, inspirational spaces that support collaboration, adaptability, and sustainability—making space structures an ideal choice. A standout example is the award-winning modular study pavilion at Braunschweig Technical University .  Braunschweig’s Study Pavilion: A Practice in Lightweight Flexibility Designed by Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke, this pavilion is a prefabricated kit of parts that champions circular construction with modular, reconfigurable space. Completed on a modest budget (~€5.2 M), it won the 2023 EU Mies Award for its adaptable, disassemblable design , and serves as a communal hub on campus. The structure is composed of lightweight steel frame modules, easily assembled and reassembled. Open-plan layout, accessible from multiple sides, with movable partitions and simple finishes.
